The 501, the 511, the 550, the Ribcage, the Baggy Dad. Levi's names its fits with numbers because the numbers are the product: a 501 is a specific rise, leg and seat, and it has been for over a century.

Knowing your waist measurement therefore tells you almost nothing. Two Levi's in the same waist can sit four inches apart on your body, and stretch versus rigid denim changes the answer again.

What to try on first

  • The 501 and its variants — the fit most people get wrong
  • Ribcage and other high-rise women's cuts
  • Baggy Dad and wide-leg fits, where proportion is everything
  • Trucker jackets, which are sized to layer

How Levi's sizing actually behaves

Rigid, non-stretch Levi's — the classic 501 among them — are cut to be worn in and typically feel a size tight on day one before relaxing. Anything with elastane fits its stated size immediately and stays there. Rise is the measurement that actually decides how a pair looks on you, and it varies enormously across the numbered fits.

How it works

  1. Pick a fit

Browse or search more than 400,000 pieces from brands like COS, Nike, Aritzia and Reformation — in plain English, filtered by vibe — or open a product you already found elsewhere.

  2. Add your photo

Use one full-length photo. Utopia builds a fit model from it — a reusable likeness that keeps your face, body and proportions — which takes about 40 to 70 seconds, once.

  3. See it on you

One tap and Utopia tailors the garment onto you with true fabric, drape and lighting, in about 30 to 60 seconds. Save the look, share it, or send it to a friend before you buy.

Levi's try-on questions

Can I try on Levi's jeans virtually?

+

Yes. Levi's is in the Utopia catalogue, so you can put a specific fit — a 501, a Ribcage, a Baggy Dad — on a photo of yourself and see the rise and leg line on your own body.

Do rigid Levi's stretch out?

+

Non-stretch Levi's are designed to be worn in and generally relax about half a size with wear. Pairs with elastane fit their stated size straight away and do not change much.

What is the difference between the Levi's fit numbers?

+

The numbers describe rise, leg shape and seat rather than size — a 501 is a straight leg with a mid-to-high rise, a 511 is slim, and the women's Ribcage sits considerably higher. Two pairs in the same waist can look completely different on.

See Levi's on you, not on a studio model.
